I bought a 'lifetime License' for PlayOn streaming services through my Roku back in 2012. I was able to watch a number of television programs until recently.

Now when I try to access these programs the service is blocked stating that I have to 'upgrade' my service to a monthly fee. I am now blocked from using the service without paying for the upgrade. I think this is a consumer fraud, probably a breach of contract issue as the service I paid for is no longer supported and requires additional fees. It is apparent that mine is not an isolated issue but probably effecting all lifetime license holders who are are being essentially extorted to pay for the upgrade. Should I file a complaint through my state DOJ consumer fraud department or contact an attorney to possibly initiate a class action lawsuit?

EDIT: Problem resolved - this can probably chalked up to a 'dumb end user' issue. I was running the PlayOn Settings program, starting and stopping the server to no avail. With the help of Support, I found there is a separate actual PlayOn program.

Running that program and logging into my account from within the program, restored all my original accessibility. Thanks extended to Thesandman21 for reaching out to help. Looks like you bought something from a company that is known to pull shit like this. This is a response from PlayOn on the exact same issue from back in 2010. The readers comments are incorrect. From the first day PlayOn was offered, we indicated that the license purchased would be good for the content/functionality that was available when they bought it, but that a major upgrade would come out in the future that would require additional fees if they want to access the new goodies.

If the customer was under the impression they were entitled to receive access to every new product/offering we developed and released for the life of the company, they came to that conclusion on their own without any statement or promise to that effect coming from us. I would recommend asking the customer to provide some indication of where/when we “originally promised” what they are claiming. It is patently false.

This customer bought a license to a product which they still have full access to, and which we still provide support for. We have since released a new product which they have the option of upgrading to, or not. If you find the original terms and services I'm willing to bet it will be worded in such a way to do what OnPlay is claiming, you purchased Lifetime for that version of the software and didn't purchase for the next version. Legally not much you can due unless you can find your terms and services from when you first purchased the lifetime subscription and prove what they claim isn't true. PlayOn Tech Support here, As a PlayOn lifetime license holder, you automatically will get the same access with PlayOn 4.0 as you had with the previous version of the software with no additional fees. What is the tracking number on your ticket?

If you could PM it to me, I can take a look and see what is up. If you bought in 2012, you had a license key, you probably just need create an account and migrate it over. We'll send you those steps if we haven't already (with the new release, we've naturally had a very high volume of support tickets and it has naturally slowed down our response). If you did pay, you will get refunded as part of our 30 day money back guarantee. Just an FYI, I'm using this on the computer, no Roku. But, I purchased a lifetime subscription for the 2.0 version. Then, when the 3.0 version came out, as mentioned in another post on this thread, I could upgrade my lifetime license for the 3.0 version.

So, I basically paid again. But, when this recent 4.0 version came out, I didn't have to do anything. I set up an account on their website, and copied my license key into my account, and it added me as the verified user and I didn't have to pay anything else. I had bought the Playon, Playlater, Adskip, and HD upgrades, and when I put those keys in, it transferred my licenses to the new version and I don't have to pay any extra, this time.
